FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How does BUG BLOCK work?

BUG BLOCK® is designed to help disrupt the scent cues mosquitoes use to locate humans outdoors. Mosquitoes track carbon dioxide, body heat, moisture and skin odours. Our botanical blend helps create a masking effect around the skin and clothing.

Is BUG BLOCK DEET free?

Yes. BUG BLOCK® is formulated without DEET and uses a blend of plant-based botanical oils.

What does BUG BLOCK smell like?

Fresh, clean and outdoors-inspired. The formula combines citrus, woody and botanical notes including lemon-scented eucalyptus, Australian blue cypress, Amyris and rose geranium.

Is it greasy or sticky?

No. BUG BLOCK spray was designed to feel lightweight, breathable and non-greasy on the skin. Many users describe it as “forgetting they’re even wearing it.”

How long does it last?

Protection time can vary depending on:

  • temperature
  • humidity
  • sweating
  • swimming
  • wind exposure
  • mosquito pressure

For heavy outdoor conditions, reapplication every 2 to 4 hours is recommended, particularly around dusk and in tropical or high-midge environments. Government guidance also notes that repellents generally require more frequent application with sweating or water exposure.

Can natural repellents still cause skin reactions?

Yes. Like many botanical products, essential oils may cause irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Plant-based does not automatically mean allergy-free. Some health authorities note that skin sensitivity reactions can occur with botanical ingredients.

We recommend:

  • patch testing before extensive use
  • avoiding broken or irritated skin
  • discontinuing use if irritation occurs

Is BUG BLOCK suitable for sensitive skin?

Many users prefer botanical repellents because they avoid heavy synthetic actives. However, everyone’s skin is different and sensitivities can still occur with essential oils.

Can I use BUG BLOCK with sunscreen?

Yes. As a general rule, apply sunscreen first, allow it to absorb, then apply insect repellent.

Is BUG BLOCK made in Australia?

Yes. BUG BLOCK® is proudly Australian made and inspired by harsh Australian outdoor conditions.

Where has BUG BLOCK been tested?

Field testing and feedback has included:

  • Noosa North Shore
  • Cape York
  • fishing environments
  • coastal and midge-prone areas
  • tropical outdoor conditions

Why use a botanical repellent?

Many people prefer botanical repellents because they:

  • avoid DEET
  • feel lighter on the skin
  • have a more natural aroma
  • suit everyday outdoor lifestyles

However, government health authorities continue to recognise DEET and picaridin as well as the main active in BUG BLOCK as highly effective options for high-risk mosquito-borne disease areas.
